Tonight's game between the Rangers and Devils in New Jersey had a harsh display when Ken Daneyko of the Devils gave a cheap shot to Rangers goaltender Greg Stefan during the 3rd period of the very high scoring contest. At 10:50 into the 3rd period, the big Devils defenseman clocked the Rangers backup goalie with a violent elbow to the back of the head that had the entire Rangers bench and players fuming, including Rangers coach Don Cherry, who was said to be less than impressed with the display.
"I think it's flat out disgusting." Cherry said in a statement after the game. "The contest wasn't even that much of a blowout, they were close the entire time and yet that kind of thing happens? Flat out classless act"
The league handed down a 5 game suspension to Daneyko following the incident. Greg Stefan was pulled from the game and was examined by Rangers medical staff, who reported that despite some dizziness, was thankfully feeling fine from the incident.
"There's no excuse of that sort of thing... I think the next time we play them and that guy is on the ice, he better keep a close eye out at all times." said Rangers forward Cam Neely, who immediately came to the defense of Stefan following the incident.
GM Atkinson is said to be pleased with the league's decision and that the team cannot focus too much on this and quickly be ready to go tomorrow night against the Blackhawks. As a safety precaution, Mike Vernon will get the start in goal.

Further developments from the previous story is that goaltender Greg Stefan has suffered a minor concussion and will not be dressed for tomorrow's game versus the Chicago Blackhawks back in New York.
Everything is unfolding as to why this may have happened all starting with Cam Neely's goaltender inferference penalty at 9:05 of the third period, which clearly may have angered Ken Daneyko. Less than two minutes later while the Devils were on the powerplay, Daneyko stepped up behind the Rangers netminder and caught him with the vicious elbow to the back of the head that sent Stefan sprawling to the ice and violently kicking his pads in pain while Aaron Broten scored just at the moment the goalie went down. The goal was counted.
This obviously set the Rangers off, namely Rangers defenseman Borje Salming who quickly acted on the anger and was given a subsequent roughing penalty. Cam Neely, who came to the aid of his goalie quickly chased after Daneyko but was stopped by officials before anymore animosity could break out. The last time the Rangers and Devils met, both men got into a violent fist fight that resulted in blood being shed.
The teams play again on Day 19 and no word yet on whether or not Ken Daneyko will be back in the lineup or who will get the start for the Rangers in that game. But it should be noted that the Rangers may be looking for some vengeance for the incident.
As of right now, commissioner Chris Kubala has not given a formal statement regarding the game and all we know is that Ken Daneyko has been served a 5 game suspension and Greg Stefan has a minor concussion. No word yet on if a fine is also to follow.
