The New York Rangers and GM Arthur Atkinson today made the announcement that the team has parted ways with head coach Fred Shero early this afternoon and have replaced him with infamous former Boston Bruins head coach, Don Cherry.
"We appreciate the years Shero has been with the franchise, but it is time to move forward and we feel Cherry has a great sense for hockey and will take our team to that next level." Atkinson said in a press statement.
Cherry, who spent 5 years coaching the Boston Bruins and one coaching the now defunct Colorado Rockies has been out of the coaching picture for a number of years now, but makes a return behind the bench for the young up and coming Rangers squad.
Cherry's record as coach is 250-153-77 in 480 appearances behind the bench.
