...Good evening everyone, I'm Art Vandelay with ongoing coverage of That 80s League hockey here on TSN. You had the opportunity to see a doubleheader of That 80s League action tonight on TSN, so let's get right to the highlights...
...In the first game of our doubleheader it was the Buffalo Sabres protecting their home ice at the Memorial Auditorium with a 6-2 spanking of the once white-hot Calgary Flames. Lately it seems Calgary is more a mass of flickering embers as they've dropped two of three. After Jim Peplinski tied the score at 1 in the opening minute of the second period, Calgary was doused with a Buffalo deluge of five consecutive goals, including the fourth of the year for defenseman Uwe Krupp. Dave Andreychuk had a goal and two assists for Buffalo, while Dan Quinn had the other marker for Calgary. Buffalo improves to 3-2-1 while the Flames are now 3-2-0...
...For the second game of TSN's doubleheader, the Vancouver Canucks traveled to Manitoba to face their Smythe Division rival, the Winnipeg Jets. Things looked gloomy for GM Dan Ramage's team after Ray Neufeld's second tally of the game (and the season) at 2:20 of the third period on a power play gave Winnipeg a 4-2 edge. Give credit to the Canucks as they've shown a resiliency early on that previous versions of the team has lacked. Petri Skriko got his 4th at 12:35 to cut the lead to one and with Vancouver pressing, Patrick Sundstrom found the back of the net with 2:34 remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime. Jim Wiemer blasted a shot past Pokey Reddick 41 seconds into the extra session to end it and send the Winnipeg faithful home disgruntled. The Canucks are 5-0-0 while the Jets fall to 1-3-1 with the hard luck loss...
...The Devils and Blues fired a lot of rubber at the goaltenders but failed to light the lamp much as New Jersey prevailed by a 3-1 score. Both teams took 35 shots, with Chris Terreri stopping 34 in the victory. Kjell Samuelsson, Randy Velischek and Aaron Broten each had their first of the year for the Devils, with Velischek's marker at 16:44 of the second standing up as the winner. Brian Sutter's second of the year was the lone tally for the Blues, who continue to struggle early on. New Jersey improves to 2-4-0 while St. Louis is now 1-3-1 on the season...
...Rangers GM Art Atkinson, who was foaming at the mouth after his team's recent two game slide, was all smiles Monday night despite being hit in the face with a puck during pregame warmups as the Rangers downed the scuffling Maple Leafs 5-2. Kelly Miller scored twice to give him four on the year, Adam Oates and Walt Poddubny each tallied their fourth and Kelly Kisio broke through with his first of the year for the Rangers, who erased a 1-0 deficit with four straight goals to put the Leafs on their heels. Russ Courtnall and Dan Daoust lit the lamp for Toronto, which had Gerard Gallant ejected after a boarding major at the 18:16 mark of the first period. The Rangers are now 4-2-0 while Toronto is 1-3-1...
...At the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, a wild back and forth scoring bonanza took place as the Penguins earned their first victory of the season with an 8-7 win over Detroit. Both starting goaltenders were yanked during the game and in the end, it was Pittsburgh's normal starter, Gilles Meloche, picking up the victory despite allowing two goals on nine shots. Mike Richter took the loss in relief, making 14 saves on 17 shots in the game. Craig Simpson's first of the year at the 14:20 mark of the third was the decisive marker. Mario Lemieux and Simpson each had four points in the win, while Kevin Stevens and Jim Johnson had three points each. Steve Yzerman had a goal and three assists for Detroit, Doug Lidster added three assists and John Ogrodnick tallied twice in defeat for Detroit. The Penguins are 1-3-2, while Detroit is 3-2-0. Bob Probert was detained by Pittsburgh police after he allegedly punched a beer vendor after the conclusion of the contest. Mike Forbes was unavailable for comment after he was taken in for questioning earlier after attempting to fondle a female usher in a luxury box...
...At the Montreal Forum, Chris Chelios scored twice and Patrick Roy stopped 29 shots for the first shutout of the season as Montreal blanked Chicago 4-0. The Blackhawks had plenty of opportunities but were unable to cash in as they went 0 for 10 on the powerplay. Rick Green of Montreal was ejected at the 11:40 mark of the first period when he cross checked Dave Manson into the boards violently. Manson was helped off the ice by Chicago's training staff and he's expected to miss 1 to 2 weeks with a shoulder injury. X-rays were negative but an MRI is scheduled for Tuesday. Green was suspended four games for the hit. Bobby Smith had the other two goals for Montreal, his first two of the year. The Canadiens are 4-2-0 while the Blackhawks are 1-4-0 and have scored a league low 11 goals....
...In Minnesota, the Oilers faced a 4-2 deficit after two periods before ratcheting up the offensive pressure. The result: a 17-4 shot advantage and four straight goals to turn a two goal hole into a two goal advantage. Jari Kurri's second of the game and sixth of the year at 13:07 of the third proved to be the winner. Wayne Gretzky scored his sixth, Mark Messier had his third, and the duo of Glenn Anderson and Kelly Buchberger each tallied their first of the year. Brian Bellows and Neal Broten each had their fourth of the year, Tony McKegney and Brian MacLellan each scored his second and Bob Brooke had his first for Minnesota. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows for Edmonton as Gretzky was injured with 6:20 to play after being caught between Esa Tikkanen and Bob Rouse deep in the Minnesota zone. He's day to day with a thigh injury but will miss at least Edmonton's clash with Winnipeg Tuesday. GM Jim Roberts stormed out of the arena and headed for the nearest male strip club to throw dollar bills around and drown his sorrows in whatever cheap beer was on tap. It's unclear if he caught the team flight back to Edmonton. The Oilers are 3-1-1, while Minnesota is 1-4-1...
...It may not make a lot of sense but the Flyers keep finding ways to win. Three third period goals broke a 3-3 tie after 40 minutes and propelled Philadelphia to a 6-4 triumph over the Kings at the Forum. Brian Propp's second of the year at 8:17 of the third was the game winner. Tim Kerr had his 5th, surprising Ed Hospodar tallied his 4th of the year, Doug Crossman had his second and Murray Craven along with J.J. Daigneault each had their first of the year for Philadelphia. Bernie Nicholls scored a pair to give him five on the year for the Kings while Marcel Dionne and Bob Bourne each had their first of the year in the loss. Philadelphia outshot Los Angeles 37-25 in the win. The Flyers are now 5-1-0 while the Kings are the lone winless team remaining at 0-3-2...
...Don't forget there's more great That 80s League action Tuesday night on TSN2 when the New York Rangers take a short jaunt to the city of Brotherly Love to face the Flyers in a Patrick Division clash at 7:30...and on TSN8 "The Ocho" you can catch the Nordiques in the Windy City to take on the Blackhawks. The puck drops on that one at 8:00 pm ET. We'll be here at 11:30 right after "Sports Night" to keep you up to date with all the latest scores and highlights from around the league. Until next time, this is Art Vandelay for TSN saying it's better to be an importer/exporter than a latex salesman. Good night...
