As noted, the second day of the 1986-87 season is now complete, and everyone can bust Jim's chops for losing his first game as the GM of Edmonton. The Oilers were bested 8-5 by Art Atkinson and the Rangers at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night.
Big props also go to Calgary's Brett Hull, who was the only Flame to beat New Jersey goalie Chris Terreri Wednesday. The problem for the Devils was that he did it three times while the Devils were held to a lone tally.
Elsewhere, Brahm's Habs were the Hab-nots for the second straight night, this time dropping a 4-3 decision to Dan's Canucks. Petri Skriko bagged a pair and Mike Bullard, acquired from Pittsburgh during preseason, scored the winner in the third.
There were a pair of ties: Henson's Jets tied with Darrin's Penguins 3-3. The Pens are undefeated...and also winless at the same time. You do the math. Also, Jay's Kings battled to a 5-5 draw with Bryan's Sabres in a battle of teams from opposite coasts.
In a game that roughly 17 people were in attendance for, it wasn't Mike Bossy or Bryan Trottier doing the damage, but Ron Handy's two goals and an assist that led the Islanders to a 6-4 win over the Maple Leafs. Toronto fell behind 6-2 before getting two goals in 44 seconds late in the third to make it respectable.
The North Stars got a pair of goals each from Brian Bellows and Dino Ciccarelli and Don Beaupre made it stand up when he wasn't taking a nap in a 4-3 win over Philadelphia. The North Stars peppered Bob Froese with 36 shots while the Flyers mustered just 16.
And finally, the Capitals managed to overcome the Blackhawks 5-4 despite the loss of star defenseman Scott Stevens for 1 to 2 weeks and Craig Laughlin for the rest of the game in the first period. Lou Franceschetti bagged the winner on a tic-tac-toe passing play at 7:37 of the third, 24 seconds after Larry Murphy's goal made it 4-2 Washington. The Blackhawks scored twice afterwards, including Steve Larmer's marker at 15:07 of the third but couldn't find the equalizer.
That's the high and lowlights of Wednesday's action. This is Art Vandelay for TSN.
