Good evening hockey fans, this is Art Vandelay for TSN with tonight's That 80s League highlights:
With Andy Moog still out after smashing his nose on a coffee table while doing a line of blow, Bill Ranford got the start for the Bruins trip to Calgary. Ranford made 30 stops but it wasn't enough as the Flames prevailed 3-1. Jim Peplinski, a guy that two or three weeks ago was bagging groceries at a Loblaws in Calgary, assisted on the Flames first goal and scored the winner at the 12:45 mark of the second period on the power play...
...Speaking of blowing, new Whalers coach Billy Bob Branzino must have thought about blowing his brains out after watching Winnipeg score four power play markers en route to a wild 8-6 win over Hartford. The Jets led 4-1 only to see the Whalers score five straight to take a 6-4 lead. Winnipeg tied the game with two goals late in the second period and Randy Carlyle's 1st of the year, on the power play at 2:35 of the third, proved to be the winner...
...The Rangers stayed hot to start the year, winning their third straight game, besting the Islanders 6-2. Don Maloney scored twice in the third period, triggering a four goal Rangers outburst to break a 2 all tie. His first goal, at 2:10 of the frame, proved to be the winner. Adam Oates added his 1st as a Ranger in the contest, while Ron Handy continues to show he deserves a chance in the NHL with his third for the Islanders...
...In Washington, the Capitals, despite playing without suspended Alan Haworth and the injured Scott Stevens, regrouped to club the Penguins, 7-2. Dave "Sister" Christian and Mike Gartner each scored a pair to lead Washington. Greg Adams, who is on the left wing with the suspension to Haworth, scored his first of the year and had three points. Randy Hillier continues to rehab from a broken leg sustained in the opener, his return date is yet to be determined. Washington was 3 of 6 on the power play as the zebras seemed to have forgotten their whistles in the Capitals zone. Mario Lemieux and Kevin Stevens were extremely vocal following the contest on the way to the team bus after finding that all the meatball subs from Subway were gone...
...Grant Fuhr had enough time to recover from his recent three day bender after getting yanked in the first period of last night's loss to the Rangers. The result was 17 saves in a 5-1 win over Quebec at the Northlands Coliseum. Peter Pocklington was rumored to be offering the ability to play alongside Wayne Gretzky for the price of $50,000 per game but GM Jim Roberts nixed the deal saying that wasn't enough money for beer. Michel Goulet scored his 2nd of the season in a losing effort for the Nordiques...
...In Vancouver, Dan Ramage had to be happy with the performance of his Canucks for 59 minutes. Vancouver led 3-0 entering the final minute of play with Richard Brodeur angling for a shutout. Even better for Vancouver, the Blues went down a man when they were called for a penalty with 18 seconds to play, negating the man advantage. Things quickly got weird: three seconds after that penalty, the Blues scored to make it 3-1. Seven seconds later, it was Doug Gilmour at 19:52 to cut the lead to one goal. Fortunately for Vancouver, they killed off the last eight seconds to take a 3-2 win in a game they went 1 for 10 on the power play in...
In a back and forth game at the Spectrum, it was Tim Kerr's goal at 18:15 of the third period that gave the Flyers a hard fought 4-3 win over the Devils. The teams battled tooth and nail, with Philadelphia blowing 2-0 and 3-2 leads before grabbing the win. Bruce Driver had tied the game for New Jersey at the 9 second mark of the third period with a goal on the power play, blasting a shot from the point off the cup off Bob Froese and into the back of the net. Froese's jockstrap was unavailable for comment after the game as it was being treated for severe trauma...
...At the Forum in Los Angeles, Steve Yzerman scored twice, including the game winner at the 3:17 mark of the third period, to help Detroit to a 4-3 win over Los Angeles. Youngsters Jimmy Carson and Bernie Nicholls each scored for the Kings, who have a bright future with talented forwards like that duo and Luc Robitaille. Vincent Damphousse had two assists for the Wings and Glenn Hanlon made 35 stops for Detroit in a battle of the Glens in net. Glen Healy stopped 18 shots in the loss, showing that the extra "n" made all the difference in the contest...
