Good evening and welcome to TSN's ongoing coverage of That 80s League hockey...I'm Art Vandelay. My apologies about what happened on Friday with Mr. Clemente. I was out of town at a prior engagement that took me through the weekend. Hopefully management will find a suitable replacement on those times when I am unable to be in the anchor position...on to the action...
...The Canucks continue to be a pleasant surprise under GM Dan Ramage as they knocked off the Blackhawks 3-2. Vancouver fired 38 shots at Dominik Hasek while Richard Brodeur saw just 19 shots. John Anderson tallied the winner on a power play at the 10:23 mark of the third period. Petri Skriko had his 3rd and Patrick Sundstrom his 2nd for Vancouver, while Dave Manson potted his first and Steve Larmer his second for the Hawks in a losing effort. Vancouver improves to 4-0-0 while Chicago falls to 1-3-0...
...In Los Angeles, Wayne Gretzky scored his 5th goal and notched his league leading 11th point but he couldn't get the Oilers in the win column as Bernie Nicholls' 3rd of the year at 8:25 of the third period gave the Kings a 2-2 draw with the Oilers. Esa Tikkanen got his 2nd for Edmonton and Mark Hardy scored his 1st for Los Angeles. The Kings outshot Edmonton 30-23, prompting a tirade from GM Jim Roberts. Damages to the visiting locker room at the Forum were estimated at $127,000. The Oilers are 2-1-1, while the Kings are 0-2-2...
...The Flyers won a back and forth contest with the Devils in the Spectrum, taking a 5-4 win. Pelle Eklund's third goal of the season and second of the game, coming at the 11:35 mark of the third, stood up as the game winner. Ilka Sinisalo and Tim Kerr each scored their fourth of the year for the Flyers, while John MacLean, Pat Verbeek, Ken Daneyko and Doug Sulliman tallied for New Jersey. Bob Froese kicked out 32 shots in the win. Philadelphia improved to 4-1-0 while New Jersey fell to 1-4-0...
...In the battle of New York teams, the Rangers jumped to a 2-0 lead only to give up four unanswered goals in a 4-3 defeat to the Islanders. Mike Bossy's first of the year at 9:18 of the third period on the power play gave the Isles a 3-2 lead and Gord Dineen's tally at 17:20 proved to be the eventual game winner as Miroslav Frycer bagged his first of the year for the Rangers with four seconds to play. The Rangers are 3-2-0 while the Islanders improve to 2-3-0 on the young season...
...In a wild game at the Capital Center, the home team rallied to take a 5-4 overtime win over the Penguins. Washington trailed 3-1 after one period and 4-2 with less than a minute to play before rallying. Against St. Louis, Scott Stevens scored the winner with five seconds to play. Against Pittsburgh, Greg Adams got his third of the year on the power play at 19:09 to make it 4-3 and 26 seconds later, Bob Gould beat Gilles Meloche for his second of the year to tie the game up and send it to overtime. Craig Laughlin's second of the game and third of the year at the 39 second mark of the extra session decided things. Mario Lemieux had a goal and three assists in the loss. Washington is now 4-0-1 while Pittsburgh is 0-3-2...
...The Bruins are left with more questions than answers after Sunday's 5-1 dismantling by the Canadiens at the Boston Garden. The Bruins led 1-0 after Craig Janney's goal in the final minute of the first period but there has been rampant speculation that goaltender Andy Moog had a shot of nose candy during intermission; Montreal scored four second period goals and cruised the rest of the way. Petr Svoboda returned from suspension to score his first two goals of the year while adding an assist and Brian Skrudland chipped in three points as well in the win. Montreal outshot Boston 38-24, including 15-3 in the decisive second period. Montreal is 3-2-0 while the Bruins dropped to 1-4-0...
...The Quebec Nordiques got back on the winning track with a gritty 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres. The teams traded goals in each of the first two periods before Dale Hunter's third of the year, a shorthanded marker at 3:33 of the third period, gave the Nordiques a lead they would not relinquish. Quebec killed off a man advantage for the final 2:18 of the game protecting that one goal lead after Michel Goulet went off for spearing. Anton Stastny and Goulet scored for Quebec while Tom Kurvers and Uwe Krupp each bagged their third of the year for Buffalo. Quebec is now 3-2-0 on the season despite being outscored 21-16 while Buffalo is 2-2-1...
...Finally, the Hartford Whalers, on their third coach of the season, picked up their second victory with a 4-3 win over Minnesota. The Whalers blew three one goal leads in the contest before making Joel Quenneville's first of the year at 4:56 of the third period stand up as the winner. Sylvain Turgeon scored his fourth, Ron Francis had his league leading sixth of the year and Ulf Samuelsson had his second. For Minnesota, Bob Rouse had his first two goals of the season and Gordie Roberts scored his first. Hartford is now 2-2-1, while Minnesota is 1-3-1...
...There's plenty of great action Monday, including the Flames traveling to Memorial Auditorium to face the Sabres, which will be televised live on TSN beginning at 7:30 ET as part of a Monday night doubleheader. The Canucks and Jets will immediately follow that contest and we'll be on to wrap up all the action at 1:30 am. I'm Art Vandelay for TSN...so long...
