Good evening and welcome to TSN's top rated hockey show "The Puck Stops Here"...I'm Art Vandelay. Tonight we're bringing you the highlights of the night's action around That 80s League...there were eight games on tap so let's get right into what went down...
...The Islanders gave new GM Brian Sawchuk a win in his debut with the club, knocking off the rudderless Blues 5-2. Ken Linseman scored a pair for the Islanders, giving him four on the year. Pat LaFontaine contributed two goals as well, his second and third of the season and Ken Leiter had his first of the year. Kelly Hrudey made 31 saves for the Islanders in the victory and was staked to a 3-0 lead after two periods. Greg Paslawski tallied both goals for the Blues, giving him three on the year. The Islanders improved to 3-3-0 while the Blues dropped to 1-4-1 on the young season...
...At Maple Leaf Gardens, the Capitals went four for five on the power play and had seven different players light the lamp in a 7-2 rout of the Maple Leafs. Bengt Gustafsson, Greg Adams, Larry Murphy, Craig Laughlin, Bob Gould, Gary Sampson and Dave Christian all beat Leafs goaltenders. Laughlin finished with four points and Murphy had three. Willie Huber had his fourth goal of the year for Toronto and Daryl Evans dented the twine with his first of the season. The Caps outshot the Leafs 38-22 in the contest, scoring four third period goals to blow it open. Washington is 5-0-1 while Toronto is 1-4-1...
...In a chippy game at Joe Louis Arena, each team lost a forward to injury (Boston lost Dave Gagner with a pulled hamstring, he's day to day, while Joe Murphy suffered a second degree shoulder separation and will miss two to four weeks), each team had a player ejected (Steve Smith for Boston and Randy Ladouceur for Detroit) but only one team walked away with points in the standings as the Red Wings took a 4-2 victory on the strength of three power play tallies. Steve Yzerman had three assists for Detroit, Doug Lidster added a pair, while Vincent Damphousse, Joey Kocur, Mike Ridley and Petr Klima lit the lamp. Peter Boutilier and Thomas Gradin scored for Boston but there has to be some concern in Beantown. GM Robert Daniel was seen in a fistfight with Andy Moog, reportedly over trying to steal the goaltender's blow in order to "try and forget about how lousy the team is playing." Bob Probert then intervened, beat up both men and left with the nose candy. Detroit is 4-2-0 while Boston is 1-5-0 and has dropped five straight...
...The Nordiques got a new bench boss in Mika Laakso but unfortunately for him, the good times stopped rolling for Quebec in the Windy City. Curt Fraser bagged a hat trick for his first three markers of the season in a 5-1 Chicago victory. Steve Ludzik and Denis Savard each tallied their first of the year while Dominik Hasek stopped 18 shots. Troy Murray and Doug Wilson each had two assists for Chicago. Gord Donnelly had the lone marker for Quebec in the game as the Nordiques were outshot 35-19. Chicago improves to 2-4-0 while Quebec is now 3-3-0...
...In Calgary, the Flames rallied from a three goal deficit to steal a point in a 4-4 tie with the Whalers. Paul Reinhart's first of the year at 17:59 of the third period knotted the game up at 4 after the Flames trailed 4-1 just 22 seconds into the second period. Ron Francis had his league leading 7th tally of the year for Hartford, which got two goals from Ray Ferraro and one from Mike McEwen to build that 4-1 advantage. Joe Mullen scored his 2nd, while Brett Hull and John Tonelli each had their fourth of the year. For Hull, it was his first goal since a hat trick in the Flames' opener. Hartford outshot Calgary 37-33 and the Flames have more issues as Joel Otto was injured in the third period and is out 2 to 4 weeks with a small fracture in his wrist. Calgary is 3-2-1 while Hartford is 2-2-2...
...In Edmonton, the Oilers didn't have Wayne Gretzky but they had more than enough to handle the Jets, taking a 6-3 victory. Glenn Anderson scored twice, giving him three on the year. Edmonton also got goals from Charlie Simmer (2nd), Mark Messier (4th), Paul Coffey (3rd) and Marty McSorely (1st) while Grant Fuhr kicked out 28 shots. Dale Hawerchuk scored his 5th, while Paul MacLean had two to give him three on the year for Winnipeg. Pokey Reddick was dismal, giving up 5 goals on just 12 shots before being replaced by Daniel Berthiaume at the 8:33 mark of the second period. As with Calgary, there were injury issues in Edmonton: Gretzky still isn't healthy, though he may be back by Thursday's clash with the Isles. Meanwhile, Keith Crowder is out at least a week after sustaining a concussion with 1:41 to play. GM Jim Roberts was playing Whack a Mole with his dong in the men's bathroom after the game trying to block out the frustration of so many injuries. Edmonton is 4-1-1 while Winnipeg is 1-4-1 on the year...
...The Canucks kept their unbeaten run going, stretching it to six games with a 3-3 tie against the Kings. Petri Skriko's fifth of the year, a power play marker at 19:57 of the third period with Richard Brodeur on the bench, stole a point for Vancouver. Igor Larionov had his 3rd and Mats Thelin chipped in his first of the year for the Canucks. Steve Duchesne and Bryan Erickson each tallied their first for Los Angeles, while Bernie Nicholls had his sixth of the year. Erickson's goal seemed poised to stand up as the game winner before Skriko's last second heroics. Vancouver is 5-0-1 while Los Angeles is now 0-3-3...
...In a defensive struggle full of hitting and fisticuffs, the Rangers edged their division rival Philadelphia 2-1. The teams combined to go 0 for 14 on the power play in the game. Miroslav Frycer's second goal of the season at 7:10 of the third period proved to be the winner. That came after Borje Salming potted his third for the Rangers in the opening frame and was answered by Rick Tocchet's second of the season later in the period. The Flyers had a 5 on 3 advantage for the final 2:28 of regulation but were unable to net the equalizer. Mike Vernon made 27 stops in the victory as the Rangers outshot the Flyers 29-28. New York improved to 5-2-0 while the Flyers fell to 5-2-0...
